Communication Passport
Help every child feel heard, understood and included! 💜
Every child communicates differently. Some children use spoken words, while others communicate through gestures, signs, pictures, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices or a combination of methods.
Our Communication Passport Template is a colourful, child-friendly resource designed to help parents, teachers, speech pathologists and other professionals better understand a child's individual communication strengths, preferences and support needs.
What's included?
This easy-to-personalise Communication Passport provides space to explore:
All About Me:Â The child's personality, strengths and important people.
Things I Love:Â Favourite activities, interests and things that bring them joy.
When I Might Need Extra Support:Â Situations where communication may become more challenging.
How to Help Me Communicate:Â Practical strategies that support successful communication.
Things That Don't Help Me:Â Approaches or situations that may cause frustration or make communication more difficult.
My Ways of Communicating:Â How the child uses speech, AAC, gestures, signs, pictures or typing to express themselves.
Who is this resource for?
This resource is suitable for children with a wide range of communication needs, including children who:
Use few or no spoken words.
Use AAC devices or other communication supports.
Have speech that can sometimes be difficult to understand.
Need additional support communicating when tired, upset or overwhelmed.
Benefit from others understanding their individual communication preferences.
How to use it
Personalise the template with information about your child or student. Wherever possible, involve the child in creating their passport so their own preferences, experiences and opinions are represented.
Once completed, share it with teachers, educators, therapists, support workers and other important people in the child's life.
Communication Passports are particularly useful when transitioning to a new classroom, starting school, meeting new professionals or supporting consistency across home, school and therapy settings.
Because communication is about more than words. It's about connection, participation and making sure every child has a voice. 💜
